Soul Music

"Soul music" is a term adopted to describe African-American popular music in the US as it evolved from the 50s to the 60s and to the 70s. It was heavily influenced by the gospel music and is known for its intimacy, passion, intensity, rhythmic sounds and spiritual roots. In short, it is the expression of the soul.

Soul music is intimate. David starts his soulful song with "Praise the Lord" in Psalm 103:1. This phrase is an expression of the intimate relationship between David and Yahweh, the covenant-making and covenant-keeping God of Israel. Soul music is an intimate expression of love and gratitude to God who first loved us.

Soul music is intense. David's soulful ballad to the Lord is expressed with every part of his life. He is saying that soul music is the intense expression of praise to the Lord that involves the physical, the emotional and the spiritual - every ounce of personal vitality.

Soul music is intentional. Soul music finds its power and passion in intentionally remembering God's blessings. When David thought about His blessing, he could not restrain his soul from singing and giving God praise.

Soul music starts on the inside and works outward. If you want your soul to experience the journey of intimate and intentional worship, spend time getting close to God. Remember how gracious, merciful and loving God is, and offer up a sacrifice of praise from deep within you. - Marvin Williams.

Trivial Pursuits

The morning started with a conversation about what colour to paint the church sanctuary. During the discussion, a mother called to ask about her son who hadn't come home the previous night. He had recently been discharged from the military and was working as a custodian.

While a few continued arguing about paint pigments, others spread out to search the closets, classrooms and bathrooms of the large church. They found Scott's jacket in the janitor's closet and pulled it out. Packages of syringes fell from the pockets onto the floor. Suddenly the search took on a more serious tone. A short time later, one of the pastors and a janitor burst into my office. "Call the police," they said. "We found him on the floor in a bathroom."

The police confirmed our suspicions. Scott had been dead for several hours. An overdose of heroin killed him. I had seen Scott in the church parking lot talking to someone in a fancy black car. Had I witnessed the drug deal? If we had been more concerned about Scott's spiritual condition than the color of the sanctuary, would he still be alive?

In Luke's gospel, we read about an encounter that raises similar questions. After eating the Passover meal, the disciples began arguing about which of them was greater (Luke 22:24-30). Jesus explained that greatness in His kingdom is measured not by whether we get what we want from others but by how well we serve one another.

too young

I spent six seasons as a high school varisty basketball coach, having been named to the position when I was 24 years old. I remember a parent at our school stopping me one day and telling me, "You're so young! How can you be a varsity coach?"

You'll always find people who will be surprised at the accomplishments of a youth. Sometimes they can't understand how others with so little of life's experience behind them can assume positions of responsibility. Perhaps they think of themselves as somehow better by the simple fact that they are a few years older.

Apparently Paul was aware of that kind of thinking back in the first century. As he was writing to Timothy about dealing with some false teaching that had arisen in the church, Paul sought to give Timothy a bit of direction. Among the things he told him was this: "Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity" (1 Timothy 4:12).

Paul didn't say, "Tim, you're just a kid. Wait till I get there and I'll handle this problem for you." Paul trusted Timothy with this vital church issue, despite his apparent youth.

Experience is a great teacher, and sometimes it takes a while for a young person to develop the needed confidence. But don't let that stop you from pursuing the area of service you think God wants you to fulfill.

Youthfulness brings with it enthusiasm, vision, hope, fresh ideas, and so many other things that the body of Christ can use. Use those traits to "be an example."-Allison Stevens

Believing is Receiving

"I'll believe it when I see it!" That was the response from a woman who was told that she had won a cash prize, no strings attached.

This woman's response clearly showed that she didn't put her faith in the empty promises of a telemarketer.

There are many things we shouldn't put our faith in - promises of easy money with no effort, tropical vacations with no money down and sight unseen, and buy-now/pay-later marketing schemes. But there are some things in life we can count on. For example, we don't question whether the sun will rise every day. When we exhale, we don't wonder if there'll be enough oxygen left for our next inhale. We can even trust the weather.

We can count on life being ever-changing. But prayer can bring stability to it. Inner peace comes in knowing that whatever we're praying about can be left in God's hands. It's important to Him. He won't forget about it, nor will He ignores us. Faith assures us that God cares about us and that He's working for our good.

Faith doesn't demand that God must come through for me exactly the way I want Him to, or even in my own time frame. Faith doesn't wring its hands with worry, wondering if anything will come of my request.

It's normal to doubt from time to time. But when waves of doubt threaten to capsize the ship of faith, remember Christ's words to believe and then receive.

How was I to KNOW?

It was concert season in high school, and the music students were getting ready for the big choir extravaganza. The music teacher handed out all the information every student needed to know about rehearsals and times and responsibilities. She gave out copies a couple of times just to make sure everyone was without excuse and that everyone knew the details. The notes and the teacher's statements to the students made it clear, for example, when rehearsal was scheduled, and that it was absolutely, unequivocally mandatory.

So what happened on the day of rehearsal? Well, one mother called in a panic, wondering what time her teenager was supposed to show up for practice. How was she to know? she wondered. Another called the teacher and said, "Oh, we're taking Tommy to Grandma's for the day. I'm sure it's okay if he misses rehearsal. right?" When the teacher kindly reminded the parent that practice had already started and that if the student didn't want to fail he'd better be there, she heard the mom say, "Well, why didn't somebody tell me? How was I to know?"

If this upset the music teacher, imagine how it must grieve God when we ignore His message to us in the Bible. What must He think when we live by our own rules, get ourselves in trouble because of our wrong choices, and then say, "How was I to know what God wanted?"

The Bible is God's note home to us, telling us exactly what He expects. It teaches us how to treat each other, how to behave in a godly way, and most important, how to glorify God by trusting Jesus as Saviour. - Dave Branon.

Elijah's Training

1 Kings 17:7-10

And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.” So he arose and went to Zarephath. Bible teachers believe that Elijah was in the wilderness for over a year.

And even though food arrived daily, his anxiety level must have been rising. For as the drought continued, the river became a stream, then a creek, then a mere trickle.
This was part of God’s training of Elijah. Imagine what must have been happening to the prophet’s faith as the water level in the brook dipped lower and lower. God could have brought water from the rocks, as He had for Israel in the wilderness, but He didn’t. The water was running out.
Remember, Elijah was “a man like us.”

How might he have responded:
• Wanting to panic?
• Wanting to give up and die?
• Wanting to reverse God’s judgment because it was affecting him personally?

This is all part of the training process. Elijah needed to know that he could trust God far more than water—even in the desert, and even when the brook dried up.

He needed to learn that: God knew all along that the brook would dry up. It was inevitable. The wadi was dependent on the heavy rains of late autumn and early winter. And when those rains did not arrive, the brook disappeared. God’s care was not hampered when the brook dried up. It would be easy for Elijah to assume that he had been forgotten by God. But he had to learn that he was dependent on God, not the brook.

God was still in control, even when the brook dried up. In fact, God was so in control that He totally disrupted the comfort zone that Elijah had become used to. Why? To stretch him in new ways.

When our comfort zone is shattered, it doesn’t mean that God has lost control. But it may mean that we’ve stopped hearing the voice of God because we’ve grown too comfortable. Even as the water receded, Elijah stayed at the brook until he was instructed to go elsewhere (“Arise go” [v.9]). The lessons of trusting and obedience were being imprinted on his heart.

So God sent him from the wadi on a journey to Zarephath. What do we know about this town?
• It was 80-90 miles northwest of Cherith, on the seacoast in Gentile, not Jewish, land.
• It was in the heart of a land dominated by Baal worship.
• It was the homeland of Queen Jezebel, priestess of Baal, the god that Elijah had challenged.

He was moving from the frying pan directly into the fire. What would Elijah
find there? A widow to care for him. That’s not very promising. Widows were normally the poorest of the poor. In a time of famine, they would be the first to run out of food, not the last. Elijah, then, is commanded to go into hostile territory to someone who will have nothing with which to care for him. Why? Because God is training His servant to walk by faith, not by sight— and nobody said it would be easy.

Applying It
What lessons can we learn from the “Wadi Cherith Training Center For Spiritual Service”?
• Sometimes God’s children suffer along with unbelievers.
• Sometimes when we think we are ready for Mount Carmel, God sends us to Cherith because we are not as ready as we think.
• Sometimes God’s hiding place isn’t an easy place.
• Sometimes the lessons we need to learn require that things get worse before they get better.

Welcome to Elijah’s world, as he personally experiences the power (and price tag) of spiritual training.

Author W. J. Petersen writes: Sometimes we don’t understand God’s dealings. We don’t know why we were sent to Cherith in the first place; we don’t appreciate the fact that God uses dirty ravens to feed us; and we certainly don’t understand why the brook has to dry up. The fact that we don’t understand is simply a sign that God’s educational process isn’t complete yet. He is still teaching us and we’re still learning

Supernatural Forgiveness

The brother of a young man who was murdered finally faced the killer in court nearly a decade after the crime. His voice trembling, he said, "Where my brother is today, he can probably forgive. But I can't."

Understandably, victims of mistreatment and injustice find it difficult to forgive - even to say the words that can begin to heal the deep wound and ease the pain that remains in the heart. To forgive is not our immediate natural response. As a result, families live alienated from each other because of long-ago hurts. Long-simmering feuds erupt into violence.

But think about what Jesus said on the cross. He had healed the sick, fed the hungry, and taught the wandering. Now, even though He was innocent, He was humiliated, mocked, and beaten. In the darkness of that moment, no one could expect His parched lips to say, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do" (Luke 23:34). But they were the first words He spoke from the cross. Imagine their impact on the people who heard them! Jesus expressed neither anger nor hatred, but the most loving words a person can bestow - words of forgiveness.
O God, help us to be like Your Son in forgiving others when we are mistreated. - JDB

Pentecostal Power

I heard about a man who, in a rousing service, prayed, "Lord, come down through the roof. I'll pay for the shingles." When I was a boy, I liked that story because I wished that the church services I attended could have been more exciting.

As I grew older, however, I began to realize that genuine Pentecostal power produces something deeper than mere excitement. Great things happened on that unique Sunday described in today's Scripture reading because the disciples were "filled with the Holy Spirit." God desires that all Christians be filled with the Spirit. It's not an option. It should be the norm for every member of Christ's body.

In Ephesians 5:18, Paul said, "Do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit." We experience this when we acknowledge our need of His presence in our lives, choose to obey God's Word, and continually depend on Him. When He takes control, the result will be that we speak encouragement to one another. We will have a song in our hearts, give thanks for all things, and submit to one another (vv.18-21). That kind of Pentecostal power can revitalize church services and transform lives. - HVL

Revive Thy church with life and power;
O Breath of Life, come, cleanse, renew us,

Fear and Great Joy

Mary and the women who went with her to visit Jesus' burial site were not expecting the reception they got at the tomb. They had come at dawn to put spices on their Friend's body - not knowing how they would get into the tomb. But as they came near the grave, they were startled to see that the huge stone had been rolled away from the opening. Even more incredibly, they saw an angel sitting on it.

It's no wonder that they felt a sense of awe and fear. But they also felt great joy after the angel invited them to look inside the empty tomb, and then he told them to go and tell the other disciples that Jesus had risen.

Nearly 2,000 years after that initial proclamation, we who are Jesus' followers also have mixed emotions about sharing such good news. We feel great joy that Jesus is alive, but we also feel uneasy telling other people about Him. The women felt a sense of awe from seeing and hearing an angel by an open grave, but our fear is different. We fear what people might think of us when we tell them that Christ is risen. But like Mary and the other women, we have a responsibility to tell others the good news. God's Spirit will give us courage to overcome our fear and share our great joy. - JDB

I will not doubt

We have a picture in today's Scripture reading of the way we sometimes react to trials. Like the disciples, when we are tossed by the waves of adversity and buffeted by the winds of human experience, we begin to doubt God's care. When everything appears to be against us, we are prone to forget that the Lord has said, "I will never leave you nor forsaken you" (Heb. 13:5).

What peace we forfeit when we refuse to take God at His Word! How much better it is to keep our eyes on Him and trust His promises!

The poet Ella Wheeler Wilcox put it like this:

I will not doubt though all my ships at sea
Come drifting home with broken masts and sails;
I will believe the Hand which never fails
From seeming evil worketh good for me.
And though I weep because those sails are tattered,
Still will I cry, while my best hopes lie shattered,
"I trust in Thee!"

I will not doubt though sorrows fall like rain,
And troubles swarm like bees about a hive;
I will believe the heights for which I strive
Are only reached by anguish and by pain,
And though I groan and writhe beneath my crosses,
I yet shall see, through my severest losses,
The greater gain.

Fly With Eagles

A well known business leader commented on the winners and the losers in his field. "The winners fly with eagles," he said, "and the losers run with turkeys."
When Jesus selected the small group to whom He entrusted His mission in the world, the men appeared to be anything but "eagles." Yet Jesus knew that by His power and grace they could soar. But He had to teach them to fly together.

What a strange mix! There was Peter, impetuous and uncouth. And Andrew, simple and believing. Thomas had a question mark for a mind. Matthew probably held his post as tax collector by cooperating with the Romans. And Simon, a Zealot, may have belonged to a guerrilla band determined to disrupt Roman trade or to riot in the streets to make life miserable for the foreign overloads.

Think of it - one from the political right, the other from the left. It would be a little like having a lawyer for the ACLU and an organizer for the John Birch Society on the same church board.
Why this diversity? Perhaps to teach us that loyalty to Jesus comes first. Discipleship, true to its name, requires us to learn love and obedience and submission in a diverse community of faith under one Head - Jesus Christ.

God builds His church with different stones,
He makes each one belong;
All shapes and sizes fit in place
To make the structure strong. - Sper

Honest to God

There are some who say, 'I see the need to have a faith that is set on fire, but I cannot claim that my life is on fire for God. I still need some more help in order to draw close to this Christ of burning, cleansing flame. How do I go about it?'

Here are my suggestions. First, be abslutely honest with yourself. Begin by facing up to the question of whether or not you have actually experienced Jesus Christ as the Giver of life and the Forgiver of your sins. It may be that you have been drawn to the Christian faith but are not consumed by it, that Christ has never been admitted into your life. Maybe you are religious but have never had a personal encounter with Jesus. If this is the case, I urge you, as soon as you have finished today's reading, to bow your head wherever you are and invite Christ into your life as your Lord and Saviour.

On the other hand, you may be a committed disciple of Christ but with no discipline or drive in your spirit. 'The Church is full of people,' observed one teacher, 'whose commitment is safe and limited.' Honesty may compel you to confess that your discipleship is a million miles away from the daring and wholehearted discipleship of the first-century Christians who were unreservedly obedient to Jesus Christ and who could say with Paul, 'Nor do I count my life dear to myself' (Acts 20:24, NKJV). Take a moment now honestly to appraise your spiritual life and ask, 'Is my life more like a dull habit or acute fever?'

O Father, help me to be honest. There are fears within me that cause me to draw back, but deep down I want to be truly Yours. I know You want to draw closer to me; help me to draw closer to You. In Jesus' name. Amen.

The Ethics of Good News

If a scientist discovered the cure for cancer, we would expect the discovery to be shared with the world. Basic ethics requires that good news not be kept secret.

When the king of Syria laid siege to the city of Samaria, the food supply was cut off. 4 men with leprosy, deciding it would be preferable to die at the hands of the Syrians than to starve, went to surrender to the enemy. But when they came to the camp, they found it deserted. The army had fled in the night.

Food lay everywhere. The four men stuffed themselves, and they were tempted to remain silent about the good news. But then the memory of Samaria with its famished inhabitants came back to them. "We are not doing right," they said (2 Kings 7:9). So they became evangelists - bearers of good news - and told others. Ultimately, evangelism comes down to this: one starving person telling another starving person where to find food.

You and I have discovered the salvation that is found in Jesus Christ. It is a breakdown of basic integrity to keep that truth to ourselves. If we have found the cure for a guilty conscience, if we have found the food of life, we are obligated to share it with others. - HWR

A prominent Christian leader was known for his willingness to help needy individuals with their social and financial problems. When asked why he took time out of his busy schedule to do this, he replied, "When I was a boy, I worked in our family grocery store. I was taught that I should never ask a customer, 'Is that all?' Instead, I was told to say, 'Isn't there anything else?' I have carried this philosophy over into my Christian work."

That man was filled with so much love for others that he wanted them to develop in all areas of their lives.

In Romans 16, the apostle Paul commended many in the church who were like this man. He singled out Priscilla, Aquila, Mary, Persis, and several others who had labored for the Lord with willing hands and loving hearts. They were not content to give minimal service but were always busy ministering to the needs of fellow believers.

When we have experienced the matchless grace of God, our hearts should be filled with compassion for our brothers and sisters in Christ. By extending to them a helping hand and assisting them in whatever way possible, we're actually saying, "God has given me much. Isn't there anything else I can do for you?" - HGB

Joy Over One

Many Christians have succumbed to the false notion that their witness to one individual doesn't count for much. But that certainly isn't supported by what we read in the Gospels. Even though Jesus' public ministry was limited to a little more than 3 years, He was never "too big" to deal with one person at a time.

It's true that Jesus preached to multitudes in Judea, fed 5,000 people gathered by the Sea of Galilee, and ministered to the crowds in Capernaum. Yet, He never lost sight of the value of one soul!

How encouraging to read of His conversation at night with an individual named Nicodemus (John 3); of His visit with one woman at the well of Samaria (John 4); and of His personal interest in one little man Zaccheus, who was sitting up in a sycamore tree (Luke 19). How thrilled he must have been when Jesus singled him out of the multitude and said, "Zaccheus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house" (v5)

If you are ever tempted to minimize the value of your personal, individual witness to a single soul, remember Jesus' example. The Bible says there is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents! - RWD

Climate Control

It's one of the few places on earth where the air is as fresh and clean as it must have been millennia ago. Constant winds keep out pollution and germs, and the climate discourages the growth of native viruses.

It sounds like the healthiest place on earth. So why doesn't anyone want to live there? Because it's just too cold. With temperatures that drop to -100° Fahrenheit, the South Pole is too frigid even for germs.

Some churches bear a striking resemblance to that sterile atmosphere. The truth of God is preached, Scriptures are meticulously quoted, and error has no chance to survive. But there is no corresponding obedience or love, and the spiritual temperature is sub-zero. The poor is given the cold shoulder (James 2:2-6). Those weak in the faith engage in icy arguments (Romans 14:1). Brothers in Christ are left out in the cold because they pose a threat to comfortable cliques (3 John 5-10). Unloved and untouched, many people leave.

The church was formed by the redeeming love of Christ and is designed to be a warm and inviting fellowship! Our desire must not be merely to "keep out germs," but to let the Lord create a climate where brothers and sisters can open their hearts to His soul-healing love. - MRD II

Most of us as followers of Christ display a cheerful spirit when we are serving Him in public. But it’s more difficult when we are called to serve Him over a long period of time in some out-of-the-way place, where no one can see us and when we receive no recognition. That’s the true test of faithfulness to the Lord.

Lord Jesus, help us to serve You faithfully in the humble tasks You have given us that no one ever sees. – DCE.

Love in Action

Communication is important to the expression of love and to life itself. Where there is love, there must be communication, because love can never be passive and inactive. Love expresses itself and moves out toward others. When communication breaks down, love is blocked and its energy will turn to resentment and hostility. Without communication, the possibilities for a relationship become hopeless and the means for healing the hurts that are caused previously will no longer be present.

Most people seem to think of communication as getting a message across to another person, “You tell him what you want him to know”, which is a one-way flow concept (monologue). However, communication is not monologue; it is a to-and-fro process (dialogue).

A couple, for instance, fail to deal with a disagreement or quarrel because each is thinking only what he wants to say, instead of trying to discover the concerns and meanings his partner brings.

Sometimes the real cause of a quarrel is not expressed and they can only deal with the superficial meanings of the conflict. The responsibility for communication calls for each other to pay attention to the meanings that the other one brings to the conflict, and also try to help the other say what he means, for his own and the sake of the other. In this way, constructive communication can be resumed and most of all, releases the expression of love.

Discipline in Love

He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him. – Proverbs 13:24

Christian love is firm. Jesus was not unloving when He rebuked the Pharisees for their hypocrisy in Matthew 23. Nor was Christ unloving to warn men of the fire of hell (Matthew 5:22 and 18:8). It would have been less than kind to leave men with the impression there are no consequences for their sins. Jesus manifested a firmness of love in expelling the money-changers from the temple in John 2:16.

Love need not be soft to be kind, “because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.”(Hebrews 12:6)

Fathers are to love their children by bringing them up in the training and instruction of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). In fact, not to discipline is not to love. Love, it will be remembered, does not mean doing what people want; it means to do them the good they need.

It was the loving concern which caused the Corinthian Christians to expel an immoral member (1 Corinthians 5:5). It was love which restored that member after repentance (2 Corinthians 2:6). Love is forgiving but it is also firm. Love is not naïve and sentimental; it is realistic and strong. We should be thankful that they are people around us who guide and discipline us when we have done something wrong so that we can improve to be better. Amen?

Love by Forgiveness

But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
– Matthew 6:15

In Mark 11:26, Jesus was not teaching that believers can earn God’s forgiveness by forgiving others; for this would be contrary to God’s free grace and mercy. However, if we have truly experienced God’s forgiveness, then we will have a readiness to forgive others (Ephesians 4:32, Colossians 3:13). Our Lord illustrated this principle in the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:21–35).

Unforgiveness can cause us an inability to love God and bitterness which will block the blessings from God. If we fail to forgive, we break the commandments of loving God. Besides that, it retains the sins of our past, bringing them into our present state and if left untreated, they will affect our future and relationship with others. This causes us to stray from the Lord and alienates us from the body of Christ which causes division in the body of Christ. Worse of all, this gives satan an advantage to create havoc in our lives.

Forgiveness is surrendering our right to have justice done for the hurt that others may cause us. We must understand that forgiveness is an activity of the will and we cannot wait for a “right feeling” before we forgive.

So now, if there is anyone who has done you wrong or even hurt you in the past, don't wait any longer. Start praying for them by asking God to help you to forgive that person. Pray that you will treat them nicely with love and respect. If you happen to see that person again, do remember to show your love by actions.

What are you waiting for? If you miss this chance, you may not have the desire to pray for that person again. If we say that we love God, then let's do what God wants us to do. Amen?

Love Your Enemies

But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
– Matthew 5:44

There were some in Jesus days who had found a “loop-hole” in the love command, it said only to love one’s neighbour, they reasoned. That would imply that those who were not one’s neighbour by proximity were not included. In fact if one was not to love his non-neighbours, then surely he will be free to hate his enemies.

It was this erroneous thinking that Jesus attacked in Matthew 5:43-47. Jesus left no “loop-hole” in the love command. He corrected their misinterpretation.

In Luke 23:34, when Jesus was on the cross, He prayed for His crucifiers. Herein is love so divine that it can forgive those who crucify Him. Truly, the love of Christ is immeasurable. Jesus has overcome evil with good and Christians are taught to do likewise in Romans 12:14-21 and Luke 6:27-37.

Christians are taught not to seek revenge but to pray for and forgive their enemies. Hatred only breeds more hatred. Returning evil for evil, or good for good, is the way most people live. But Christians must live on a higher level and return good for evil because God has shown mercy to us. We are to treat others with mercy as God has treated us.

Of course, this requires love, because our first inclination is to fight back. It is difficult and surely we need to pray and ask God for love as we try to show kindness to our enemies. Do unto others in the same way you want God to do to you.

So now, if there is anyone who has done you wrong or even hurt you in the past, don't wait any longer. Start praying for them by asking God to help you to forgive that person. Pray that you will treat them nicely with love and respect. If you happen to see that person again, do remember to show your love by actions.

Love Yourself !

The second is this: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.’
– Mark 12:31

To love one’s neighbour as himself one must know how to love himself. Christians have sometimes backed away from self love because of the stress laid on self denial in Scripture (John 12:25, Luke 14:26, 2 Timothy 3:2, Matthew 16:24). These Biblical condemnations are not in opposition to loving one’s self but against over loving one’s self. Those who condemn self-love seem to confuse it with selfishness. Respect and care for oneself (self-love) is not identical with egotism, which is selfishness, seeking to satisfy only itself.

Jesus clearly implied that one should love himself and that this should serve as the basis for loving others. The text does not read “love your neighbour instead of yourself”, but, “as you love yourself, love also your neighbour”.

A Christian should love himself for three reasons. First, he is made in God’s image which is worthy of love. Christian love enhances the value of self by virtue of the Father’s love for every self. To accept oneself as a child of a heavenly Father who loves, cares, and values him is a significant experience. How can one despise or reject a self, whether my own or another, whom the Father values enough to love? Secondly, self love is the basis for loving others. Lastly, because God loves us, and if we do not love ourselves then we do not love what God loves. Human experience has confirmed that those who do not have a proper respect and concern for themselves will be lacking in these same things toward others.

All who are capable of loving others will be capable of loving themselves also. Loving another enhances the worth of the lover as well as the beloved. Self-love needs to outgrow self-centred fixation to become free to turn upward to God and outward to man. When our love grows up and out, it becomes mature in focusing toward others. As the seed becomes the fruit, so the self grows into the nourishing delight of Christian love.

What is Christian Love? (Part 2)

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
- 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

There are three types of love:
(1) Egoistic love (Erotic love), which seeks to get but not to give. Erotic love, by this definition is self-centered, focusing on care for the self. Its only purpose is to satisfy itself.

(2) Mutualistic love (Philic love), which is involved in a give and get relationship. Philic love is found in friendship. It gives with the expectation that it will receive.

(3) Altruistic love (Agapic love), which gives with no demand to get anything in return. Agapic love desires to satisfy others. It is unselfishly concerned for or devoted to the welfare of others. It is not what one can get but what he can give that is the characteristic of divine love, it is sacrificial. God loves even when there is no love in return. God’s love is in fact unconditional. God’s love is a giving love even if no one receives it. This is Christian Love.

Christian love is great in depth and range. In depth or vertical, it is divine as coming from God, who takes the initiative in loving man and inviting man to share with Him. In range or horizon, it is universal, excluding no one but reaching out to love all people regardless. This is the only way for us to ‘Worship God by Loving Others’.

What is Christian Love? (Part 1)

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. – Mark 12:30

The command to love means nothing unless Christians understand what love means. One does not need to search further, for the meaning of love is found in God and certainly the Bible means more when it says, “God is love.” Love is God’s very nature. To understand God’s nature is to know what love is all about.

In John 3:16, God demonstrated His love through Jesus Christ who fulfilled all that the law required. The law spelled out the meaning of love but Christ lived it out. The law expressed the demands of love but it itself cannot fulfill those demands. The law tells us what love ought to do but it cannot do it.

God provides this love for all who are willing to receive it. God hates sin so much that He cannot even look on it (Habakkuk 1:13, Proverb 6:16-19), but He loves sinners so much that He gave the best He had for them, His only Son.

All who are willing to die to self and allow this love to flow through them will receive the power to love as Christ loved. When we experience the compelling love of God, we will naturally grow to love the people around us as Christ loved.

What's for Dinner?

I can hardly imagine inviting special friends over for dinner and then throwing a few leftovers into the microwave to serve up to them. But if I were to do that, it would speak volumes about how I realy feel about them.

Giving God the leftovers of our lives speaks volumes about His true worth to us. When God asked Abraham to give Isaac back to Him as an act of worship, Genesis 22:1 calls it a test. A test to see if there was anything in his life that he treasured more than God.

There are times when God requires something really important to get His work done. God may call us to sacrifice portions of our time or money or comforts to advance His cause. The way we respond to what He requires says volumes about how we really feel about Him.

"Anyone can offer the leftovers. Only those who love God more than anything else will serve up the very best for Him." - Joe Stowell.

No sacrifice we make is too great for the One who sacrificed His all.

Diseases of the Tongue

“Do not go about spreading slander among your people.”- Leviticus 19:16 (NIV)

One of the diseases of the tongue is gossip. Going about spreading slander, untrue, malicious talk is gossip. The word “devil” in the New Testament means “the slanderer” in Greek. That is the main description of satan in the Bible.

When one gossip, he is actually doing the devil’s work in spreading slander. Not only do Christians need to avoid gossiping, Christians also have the responsibility not to receive gossip. Gossips are poisoned. If we receive them into our hearts, our lives and relationships with others will become poisoned by those morsels of gossip.

What are you busy with?

Everyone is busy. I am busy. Different one of us is busy with our daily stuffs. "Is busy good or bad?" Perhaps we, Christians should ask the question in another way, "Are you busy at the expense of spending time with the Lord?"

Nothing on earth comes close than spending unhurried, quality quiet time with our Lord. From my five cents worth of observation, there are many Christian books and seminars that talk about this aspect of spending quiet time, but it is really up to each individual one of us to create the time out of our hectic lifestyle. This reminds me of two points, first, “ruthlessly eliminate hurriedness” and second, “involve in the absolutely essential.” One can also relate to the following phrase by Lin Yutang, a Chinese writer and inventor, “The wisdom of life consists of the elimination of non-essentials.” Therefore, how true is it for us to spend our time on things that matters the most than on the unnecessary. Needless to say, the things that matters most to us will be based on God’s will for us.

We are all busy serving in ministry. But if our motives aren’t right, we can’t be right with our Lord.

Praying For The Lost.

1. “Why pray? If God wants them to come, they will come. I don’t have to pray for them.”
2. “Why pray again? I prayed for them long time ago already.”
3. “Prayer is useless, I will rather invite my friends to church personally.”
4. “No point praying, there is no improvement at all.”
5. “When should I stop praying? I’m busy with my exams and work. I can’t be praying for them forever right?”
6. “Don’t worry. They will come to know God when the time is right. Rather, I should worry about myself first.”
7. “I don’t care about the rest, that’s their business. As long as I’m saved, I’m OK.”
8. “Why pray now? The evangelistic meeting is held next month. It’s too early anyway.”

Sounds familiar? Have you ever have such thoughts in your mind before? What is wrong with them? Well, they are all self-centered thoughts which portray prayer into a chore, thoughts that have no place for love, a lack of love for the lost.

One will pray for his or her loves one out of love, persistently and regularly. Praying for the lost does not happen only when the evangelistic meeting is around the corner. It is the love of God that we experience that compels us to pray for our loves one, friends, relatives and the needy. We love God because He first loves us.

Look back into your life and be grateful how God has helped you in your darkest moments, moments where no man is able to save you but only God, through Jesus Christ. How awesome is the love of the Almighty God!

Start sharing this love with the lost, through prayers with the love of God in your heart of hearts.

“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.”
1 John 4:9

In this world that we are living in, we often heard people talking about "me, myself and I." Sadly, people are often caught up in this individualistic society that they pay little or no attention to the needy.

In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Luke 10:25-37, the Bible teaches us to love our neighbour as ourselves. To help and serve others who are in need. We can see this in other similar verses,

“Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.” - 1 Corinthians 10:24.

“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.” - 1 Peter 4:10.

If you are still not convince,

“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” - Mark 10:45.

We must not be like the priest or Levite who do nothing to help the victim. They were the ones who understood the law well, yet being righteous on the outward appearance, they acted otherwise.

Are you acting like the priest or Levite? Do some soul searching and we will know the answer ourselves. Confess and ask God for forgiveness. Let us walk our talk and obey Jesus.

Just as He has said, “Go and do likewise.”

Exodus 20 not just showcases on the TEN commandments, but it also speaks about God's character. Out of 10, God made 4 about Himself.

So much about messages that shares about God pursuing us. It is of no doubt that God's love for us is eternal, everlasting, and unchanging, but somehow we miss out a critical portion of our love relationship with God.

He desires us to pursue Him.

If I may put it this way, the tinge of wanting us for Himself was explicit in the first 4 commandments. Making Him first place in our hearts is such a priority that God could not place anything else above it.

A famous author puts it that in God's heart, there probably lies a portion in which only that particular YOU can fill. Without your love for Him, that part can never be filled by anyone else on earth. Except you.

Imagine a pitched dark room. With lighted candles scattered all around. What a lovely picture it is. However, it will only remain as an image to be admired. Place all the candles together, and you get a light. Unlit ones will be caught in the passing of sparks. Now, you get to have a room that can function.

We thank God for multiple chances for individual of us to be revived! God smiles at what he see from above. But more than that, He wants us to be more than a picture. Coming together means more than just having fellowship, similar ideals, and doing things together. It goes to building relationships, putting aside our differences and love. This last month as we impact our community, let's come with hearts as one. It's easy for us to go about our daily lives just being concerned about ourselves and our loved ones, but we would not had been an impact to others.

Why Not? Evangelise Part 3

Why do we cringe at the thought of evangelizing to our friends? The answer is obvious. We do not like to fail. Sharing the Gospel with our friends who are not interested makes us feel like a failure. Our friends may treat us differently or even outcast us. However, all these are lies and threatening thoughts that the devil uses to discourage us.

Why don’t we care about the things that God care about the most? Firstly, we may not be totally convinced of the truth of Christianity ourselves. We may believe in Jesus, but we may not believe it enough for us to share the Gospel with our friends. We need to be 100% convince of the truth that we proclaim and proclaim it with confidence.

Secondly, we may not realize the extent to which we have been forgiven.

“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little." - Luke 7:47

Only when we understand the depth of our sins, then will we fully appreciate the depth of God’s forgiveness. Only when we know how much He has forgiven us, we will realize how much God loves us. Being compelled by God’s love, we will then naturally want to do something to please Him, out of a heart of gratitude.

Thirdly, we may forget the urgency of the task. It is so easy to be caught up in our daily activities that we often place the sharing of the Gospel at the back of our mind. Spreading the Gospel is the best thing that we can ever do for others. Helping your friends to take a step closer to God is the best action of love that we can ever express.

We need this passion and love for the lost. In addition, we must not be quiet when it comes to sharing the Gospel with our friends and loves one. If we, the ones who claim to have the truth and keep quiet, guess what will our friends and loves one listen to? They will be listening to the noise of the world. Therefore, fellow Brothers and Sisters, let’s continue to open up our mouth and proclaim the Word of God to the lost.

Evangelise! part 2

For evangelism to be effective, it must also invite curiosity, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

3.
Create a hunger

Evangelism is a process. It takes time for the seed to grow. We may not share all of the Gospel at one go, but each time we bring them a step closer to know God. However, we must understand that the Word of God that we shared with our friends shall never be gone to waste.

“So is My word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
- Isaiah 55:11

“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.”
– 1 Corinthians 3:6

At the end of every conversation, what we want to achieve is to answer the question that surface their doubts in their beliefs, while minimizing defensiveness and yet creating a desire in them to hear more about what the Bible says. We want to create a hunger in them to continue the dialogue the next time we see them.

4.
Holy Spirit

We must also understand and be convinced that it is the Holy Spirit that work behind the scenes to convict others using the words that we speak.

“At Iconium Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue. There they spoke so effectively that a great number of Jews and Gentiles believed.”
– Acts 14:1

Only the Holy Spirit can convict a person of sin.

“When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt[a] in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:”
- John 16:8

Evangelise! part 1

Recently, I got hold of an interesting book by Norman Geisler and David Geisler, titled “Conversational Evangelism.” After 2 weeks of reading, it has truly broadened my understanding on evangelism. To many, evangelize is to spread the Gospel to non-believers. It means more than just that.

For evangelism to be effective, it must involve listening and being ready to answer the question raised by our friends.

1.
Listen

We need to listen and understand the questions that our friends have before we deliver the right answer to them. Through listening, we can understand and uncover intellectual, emotional and spiritual barriers that are keeping them from placing their faith in Christ.

Once, I attempted to share the Gospel with 3 of my close friends. It was only through that conversation that I got to know the barriers that my friends were having. One of them got a bad experience about Christianity before and one is skeptical towards religions as a whole. Another one is more concern in areas such as commitment and tithing. It was then I realize that they have these thoughts all the while in their lives. It was also through conversations that I realize the amount of lies and deceptions that the devil has planted in the minds of my friends.

We want to listen to their hearts concerns and to lead them out of the maze. Only then, they will be more open and receptive as we share the Gospel to them.

2.
Being ready to answer

By being ready to answer their questions will help to remove the road blocks that hinder them from coming to Christ.

“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,” - 1 Peter 3:15

Besides that, engaging in dialogue with them helps to surface the truth for themselves.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” – 2 Corinthians 10:5

We can help them to surface the truth for themselves by asking questions to the beliefs that they hold onto, by understand the discrepancies and the inconsistencies in their beliefs and this will help them to see the truth for themselves.

Truth bout PEACE

"Don't worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God's peace, which exceeds anything we can understand."
Philippians 4:6-7

What kind of peace is Paul talking about? He is not talking about an absence of conflict, since conflict will unfortunately forever be a part of our lives on this Earth. Paul is talking about a lack of anxiety in the face of conflict. He is promising that if we truly give our concerns to God, then we will never have to worry about the outcome.

We may have apprehension about physical or emotional suffering on the horizon; this is perfectly natural. Once again, let us turn to the example of Jesus in the Garden, (Matthew 26:38-39) and take note of the fact that Jesus is troubled by the knowledge of the suffering that He will soon endure, but not the outcome. Jesus knows beyond any doubt that His Father in Heaven is in charge and that victory over death is assured. We must follow Jesus' example and never forget that God's amazing plan for you will not be circumvented.

How, then, can we possibly have anxiety when such a powerful, loving God is in charge, and what does it mean when we just can't stop worrying about how things are going to turn out?

1) You have not fully trusted God with the outcome.

In the face of conflict, it's normal for us to say a quick prayer asking God for help, but this is not the same as lifting the problem up to God and trusting Him with it. Too often, we conclude our prayer and then immediately resume fretting about how we will ever resolve the situation. If the problem keeps you up at night or occupies your mind constantly, then you have not allowed God to truly be in charge. You are still trying to solve the problem. Only after we allow God to be in charge will the peace which Paul describes begin to flow into us. If we do not have that peace, then we are still trying to be in control.

2) You have not done your part to solve the problem.

When trouble comes, what often seems like unease about the outcome is nothing more than guilt about our failure to do what must be done. We often know exactly what we must do, and our anxiety comes from our failure to act. The irony is that if we would simply do what we know must be done, our anxiety about the outcome would vanish. The example comes to mind of a man who has been cheating on his taxes and stays up nights worrying about when the IRS will finally knock on his door. He can pray to God all he wants that his indiscretion will not be found out, but God will be very reluctant to help until the man comes clean. His worry will not diminish until he finally calls the IRS, confesses what he has done and faces whatever consequences are to come. Immediately, the anxiety will vanish. The man now has a new dilemma wondering what his fate may be, but this is a new issue which he must lift up to God anew, one in which God will be much more inclined to intervene.

Are you worried about getting poor grades in school? What you may really be feeling is guilt for your inadequate study habits. Your anxiety at not being able to find a job may actually be remorse at doing more TV watching than job searching. If you have concerns about your situation, search yourself and really examine how much is worry and how much is actually your guilty conscience. Do whatever you need to do in order to make things right, and then you can come before God with a right heart, truly ask Him to take control and implore Him to relieve your angst. If you do these things, His amazing peace will follow.

Something GREATER

The miracle of Jesus feeding the five thousand as told in John's Gospel is a very well-known Bible story; in fact it's one of the few miracles which is recorded in all four Gospels (see also Luke 9:12, Mark 6:36, Matthew 14:16). However, John's account is slightly longer and contains a detail which is not found in the others. See if you can pick it out.

When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, "Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?" He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. Philip answered him, "It would take almost a year's wages to buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!" Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, spoke up, "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?" Jesus said, "Have the people sit down." There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish. When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, "Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted." So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten. After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world." (John 6:5-15)

Did you find it? The detail which is missing from the other three Gospels is the little boy from whose meal Jesus creates the feast.

As I play this scene out in my mind, I imagine the apostles making their way through the crowd calling out for anyone who might have a scrap of food to share. Their desperation and their desire to please the Lord would have been written on their faces and evident in their voices.

In the midst of all of this, a boy comes forward and selflessly offers all that he has. From this simple offering, Jesus performs His miracle.

There are many ways Jesus could have solved this problem. He could have rained bread from Heaven, or He could have waved His hands and filled their stomachs. Instead, He took what was freely offered and turned it into something miraculous.

This pattern is repeated time and time again in our own lives. There are many ways God can help us during our times of need, but the most common pattern is for God to take what we offer and turn it into something greater than we can do on our own.

In conjunction with asking God for help, we need to ensure that we do the part that we can do. If we've lost our job, then we need to start working on our résumé right away. If we have an exam coming up, we need to study. Only once we have done all that we can do will God take over and do what only He can do.

If we are asking God to open doors for us, we need to be standing at the doorstep, ready to enter.

God's perspective for a conversation.

"So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you."
1 Peter 5:6-7

I think we sometimes miss the point of petitioning (a request made for something desired) God. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking God for things we need or even things we want. The important thing to keep in mind is that actually getting the thing we're asking for is the least important part of the whole process.

This seems funny. Why ask for something if you don't care if you get it? I'm not saying you should not care about the issue which is troubling you; I'm saying you should not be concerned with the exact outcome. We need to trust God to solve the problem His way.

Suppose you're having trouble making ends meet and you're not sure how you will pay this month's bills. You may ask God to send you some extra money. You may ask God to help you find a better paying job. In all likelihood, God is not going to do either of those things, though it's certainly possible. The point is that it really doesn't matter how God decides to solve the problem. By asking God for help, you have admitted that you need Him, and that is what really matters. How God decides to deal with the issue is immaterial, but rest assured He will intervene in the best way possible.

God does not want you to depend on a particular solution; He wants you to depend on Him.

Asking for God's help in all situations is a very important part of our relationship with Him. When you ask for God to help, you are indirectly saying that you trust Him and that you need Him. You are admitting your weakness and acknowledging His strength. You are submitting and surrendering to Him.

Another reason to ask for God's help is not to seek a specific outcome, but rather to receive His comfort, support and peace. God may not provide a direct resolution to every difficulty in our lives, but He will comfort us. When you seek God during times of trouble, large or small, you are saying, "God, be with me during this time. Let my thoughts be with you and let me feel your presence."

Tell the Lord everything you need and share with Him every care and worry that is on your mind. Don't seek a resolution, but seek God instead and you will receive peace and comfort, along with God's best solution thrown in for free. It almost certainly won't be the solution you had in mind, and it may not be easy to endure, but it will be the right solution in the long run.

Awesome awesome camp! This is THE best camp I've ever been to, and I believe it's agreed across all campers! Non-campers don't have to feel sad, the notes for the camp will be out soon!

One Life, One Destiny is one Spirit-filled camp and I thank God for delivering His Word to His church! Here's what was delivered on day 4 morning by Pastor Rupert:

NEW WINESKINS

Through the camp, God spoke very clearly about forgetting the former things, and start a new chapter fresh and undaunted. New wine cannot be contained in old wineskins.

Remember the ball game we played? Unless each of us play a part in being part of the new momentum, the game will not be able to continue. So long someone decides to hold back or to not commit into the 'game', we will not be able to move forward as far as we may.

So.. are you going to be part of the new wave?

God’s purpose for the church is also his purpose for every Christian. As individual followers of Christ we’re to use our lives in worship, ministry, evangelism, discipleship, and fellowship. The church allows us to do it together. We are not alone in serving Him.

That’s why we love the church with all of our heart. It’s the most brilliant concept ever created. It has outlasted cultures, governments, skeptics, enemies from within and without, and it will continue to do so until Jesus returns.

We must love the church as Christ does and we must teach others to love the church also. “… Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.… After all, no one ever hated his own body, but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church – for we are members of his body” (Ephesians 5:25, 29-30 NIV).

The truth is you can’t serve God in any other generation except your own! You may want to but it’s only wishful thinking. We cannot bring back the past. Ministry must always be done in the context of the current generation and culture. Whether we like it or not, we must minister to people in the culture as it really is, not in some past form that we may have idolized in our minds.

We don’t know what the final chapters of your story will hold, but we can be confident of this:
“… that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 1:6 NIV)

God finishes whatever he starts. He is Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. There are many factors that influence your life, things you have no control over: your background, nationality, age, giftedness. These were determined by the sovereignty of God.

But there is one important factor that you do have control over: how much you choose to believe God! You can believe God as you serve your generation according to the will of God.

Last Sunday I was sharing on the lesson of love for discipleship class. Though I have been through the same lesson for umpteenth time, He never fails to reveal another depth of this thing called LOVE.

Impacting lives is about love, isn't it so? Loving people matters so much to God that it becomes the second greatest commandment that Christ speaks about in Matthew 22 (verse 37-39).

"Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart."
1 Peter 1:22

We are called to love one another with the same kind of agape love that God first love us with, from the heart. God did not love us with His mind, because loving people is not from thinking logically. In fact, it is the opposite! He ask us to love our neighbours and our enemies, much more than ourselves!

Love is acceptance (and many more...). If we wanna impact the people around us, we love them with the love of God, from the heart. More so for our brothers and sisters in the same body, because by our love for each other that all men will know we are His disciples:)

But He said to them, “Why are you so fearful? How is it that you have no faith?” Mark 4:37-40,

The first level of faith that Jesus speaks about is no faith. No faith believes God does not care. It is typified by the disciples who woke Jesus in the midst of the storm and said, “Lord, don’t You care that we’re perishing?”

Perhaps you are in a storm today; and, to you, it seems like God is asleep and that He doesn’t even care. That He is aloof, disinterested, and disconnected from you. That you are going through hell and He doesn’t care.

Do not believe that lie. If you buy into the lie that God does not care, it robs you of faith. And you cannot get any lower than that.

Do not believe the lie that God is detached and unconcerned. Don’t think, “If God cares about me, why would this have happened? Why am I going through this storm? Why is this happening in my life? God doesn’t care about me. He doesn’t even know my name.”

Dear brothers and sisters, God does care. He is not going to let you perish. He is interested in even the smallest details of your life.

1 Peter 5:7 says, Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you!

Are You Ready to Give Up?

In the book of Matthew, it tells us that the end of the age will come like a thief in the night.
(Matthew 24: 42-44) “Am I ready for God to receive me?” Perhaps we may say “God, You take complete control of my life” but yet we do not allow God to touch our great amount of leisure time like hooking on to the net to chat, spending huge amount of time on computer games or television while actually the time can be spent fruitfully studying the bible or sharing the gospel with a friend.

We live in this world, and many a times we let situations overcome us that God no longer seems to be in our lives. Whether are we studying or working, we naturally want to be successful in the things we do. However, when we become so successful in our studies and work, when God calls upon us to do other works, are we ready to give up?

To some, giving up materially may be easy but when it comes to give up time and bad habits, it is very tough. However, let us offer ourselves to God. For someone who would die to save us from the bondage of sins, how much more will He do for us if we give ourselves wholly to Him. Giving up our bad habits allows God to implant good and new habits in our lives, that we may bear characteristics of Christ likeness.

A servant cannot serve two masters. Neither can we serve God and the world at the same time. Hence, if we truly love God, our focus should not be on the things of the world. Yes, we should continue to work hard but not for the world but for God. God puts us in service to Him so that His kingdom may be expanded. We are not just students nor just working young adults but we are also servants of God, called to be a light in the darkness, to reach out. Therefore, we ought to obey what He has planned for us.

Let us be ever ready to offer ourselves wholly unto Him, giving up our own desires, trusting in Him that He has got much better things for us. Let us not put our focus unto things of the world, but onto the living God. Let us follow the way of Apostle Peter, who gave up all the fishes he caught and followed after Jesus.

The story of Gideon is a fascinating account of how the Lord used a regular guy to do an amazing work. Gideon didn’t see how God could possibly use him to lead his people in a military victory. Though Gideon doubted, the Lord didn’t give up on him. He stood firm on His plan to use Gideon to deliver Israel (see verses 17-40 in Judges 6). After the angel gave Gideon confirmation that he was an angel of the Lord, Gideon built an altar to the Lord. Gideon submitted himself to the Lord and was ultimately used to defeat the Midianites and deliver his people.

We can all be encouraged by this story. God is the God of Faith. God actually has faith in us in that he will speak things over us that will occur if we will simply agree with Him and follow Him. Paul wrote that God is “God who gives life to the dead and calls things that are not as though they were” (Romans 4:17 NIV). When God declares things that are contrary to present reality, He is speaking it by faith. When we agree with Him and obey, we help bring the manifestation of that faith to pass.

When we set out to follow Jesus and live the “new life in Christ,” the reality of our “old self” may make this task look impossible. We can consider 2 Corinthians 5:17 as God’s “faith statement” over us: “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” As we call this to mind, we have the choice to agree with God that this is going to be the case, or we can give up and admit defeat.

By agreeing with God on it, we engage His word with our faith, and supernatural power is released in us to complete our transformation into the new creation. This may not happen instantaneously, as there are likely sin issues that we’ll need to work through that will take time to surrender completely. The point is, however, that we will move positively toward the complete manifestation of what God said we would become – a new creation.

As we close this April with our theme on Honouring God, we know it doesn't end like this!

Like what Ps Glenn Lim mentioned during service last saturday, in order to honour Him with worth, we need to first know Him, His nature and His character.

Let's not wait till Jesus has to shake us in order to truly know Him. I am very certain for you who has embark on this journey, life has never been the same:) He has been faithful and true, and there is nothing on earth we can exchange Him for. Continue to ask Him to reveal Himself to you, as you fear Him.

For us who has left our love, or because of other stuff has rob our gaze away from the One, it's never to late to come back to His heart. He desires the love of His children and those He create personally. Don't let things that are here for awhile and gone the next take priority for eternity.

"Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to.'
Luke 13:24

Indeed, Pastor Glenn shared a wonderful message about leaving our first love and not forgetting the times when we are so desperate for Him. Below is a devotion that I read that is really ministering.

Sometimes God feels so close. Some mornings He seems to speak so clearly in my Bible study, some days I see Him in everything around me, sometimes His voice is almost audible. Other times I can’t seem to feel His presence. He seems so far away. I want to have the enthusiasm and awe of the new believers I know…all the time. But then that is life. It is busy. It is hard and we do all we can to endure the hardships and make good decisions and just keep our head above water.

Recently, I was complaining to God about how hard life is, how I had endured plenty and thought a little “easy street” might be nice and how I just wanted to feel His presence more. Then I opened my Bible, He took me to Rev 2:1-4:

To the angel of the church in Ephesus write: These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands: 2I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. 3You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. 4Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love.

Becoming a Christian and then living life as best you can is not all that can be. John McArthur looks at this passage and says “We can’t just carry on with our responsibilities with a diminishing love for God and others.” God wants us to enjoy Him in this life (Psalm 27:13) He wants an “in love” relationship all the time and if God wants it, we can have it, if we are willing.

In the very next verse in Rev 2:5 God tells us how– He says “remember the height from which you have fallen and do the things you did at first”. Remember the grace God offered you. Remember the blood that has made you white as snow. Remember the love that He showed on that cross and remember others need to see this love and grace in you. Oh, how this one hit home for me. It is so easy to be so busy, so caught up in life, so aware of the evil in this world that I lose the awe of my Savior. God forbid. He is the One who will never leave me nor forsake me. He is the One who has carried me through so many hard roads. He is the One who loves the unlovely me and whose blood gave me a robe of white.He is the One who has been faithful.

Love the Lord – it is the greatest commandment…Matthew 22:36-38 (New International Version)"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.

Let’s pray together to love Him like we first did, to be in continued awe of Him, to remember His grace, to encourage each other as we look forward to the day of His return. He is there. His arms are open wide. Nothing compares to Him. He is the solid rock, the hope of all nations. He is the soon-coming King who knows every hair on your head. He is in control. He is all good. He has not left you. He will never leave you. All glory and honor and praise belong to Him.

Did you know that God has put good things within you that He wants you to give away to others? Imagine that within your spirit God has placed two baskets. As you begin your day, the Holy Spirit deposits in one basket what God wants you to give away that day. Each day the number and type of things deposited in your basket may vary, depending upon the needs that God wants you to touch and the people He wants you to bless.

Often, what the Holy Spirit deposits in your basket is a mystery. You do not know exactly what God has in mind for you during a day. The good news is that He doesn’t ask you to try and figure it out or run around in circles trying to make everyone happy or meet everyone’s needs. What He does want you to do is to be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and to respond to Him in simple faith and obedience.

As you go through your day, you may discover that the Holy Spirit has deposited within your basket a prayer He wants you to pray, a word of encouragement He wants you to speak, a blessing He wants you to give, or an act of kindness He wants you to extend.

For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Ephesians 2:10 NIV

Whatever it is that the Holy Spirit has deposited in your basket is what He desires for you to give away during your day. When you go to bed at night, it is good to have an empty basket. Nothing needs to be carried over, because the Holy Spirit will make new and fresh deposits each morning.

Earlier, I said there were two baskets that God has placed in your spirit. The second basket does not contain the things you give away during the day but the things that you receive from God that enrich your life and refresh your spirit. When you bless others, you are blessed; when you give out, you receive; when you empty yourself, you are filled.

When we obey God and cross the line, there will bound to be a challenge. Elijah faced drought; a widow who have insufficient food to share. That's all we get for obeying?

BUT be steadfast! When we cross the line that God draws for us, God takes the responsiblity for the situation. God planned everything in advance, and there is no one situation that is surprising to Him. All we need to hold onto is the promise of a breakthrough that comes in that challenge.

For the widow as well, thinking that she was preparing for her last meal, God draws a line for her to give a portion of what she has to Elijah. Who in the right frame of mind would have asked a poor widow in her last meal to 'first make a small cake of bread for me(Elijah)'? But she crossed the line, did what she was told, and saw a breakthrough. That meal wasn't the last. It was the first of many more to come.

LOUDFEST '09 has been incredible! It has no doubt changed my attitude, and I hope it encourages you too.

Take a read: 1 Kings 17:1-14 (NOW my brother / sister! Procrastinating never ends.)

Now imagine our causeway that links Singapore and Malaysia. Two countries, one line in between. If we remain on either one side, that's by far the furthest we would comb. Okays, with a similar idea, let's see when God draws a line for us, and that line is not meant to restrict us, but to obey His leading. For example, we can be all into our academic results as a student. Then, God draws a line to ask you to cross over to share gospel to a certain friend. Well two choices: to stay at where we are and tell God we shouldn't mind other people's business, or to be bold and share His love to your friend and see God does His work.

It doesn't seem to be much of a struggle to cross the line, but don't we often get caught of not obeying Him who calls us? Let's see about the Elijah. He obeyed God by proclaiming neither dew nor rain over the land, and went into hiding at Kerith Ravine. He crossed the line and obeyed God. Then something awful happened. The brook dried up! Now what about blessings of obedience?

"Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens? Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, or weighed the mountains on the scales and the hills in a balance?"

Isaiah 40:12

What a superb reminder of God’s mighty power in the creation of the universe and galaxies. Even more amazing, He measured the span of them between His thumb and first finger. Hold those fingers up and look at their span for a moment. Now imagine God looking at the space between His thumb and first finger while saying, “I think I’ll make the universe about that big.” If that doesn’t give you a picture of just how big our wondrous God is, think about this: He poured the oceans from the palm of His hand! Oh, friend, when I gaze upon a huge body of water that could swallow me up in an instant, and I realize that God, at some moment in time, held the entire ocean in the palm of His hand, it simply blows me away!

As I consider this truth, I find myself awestruck by the greatness and glory of our God. The Lord God is so gigantic that He knows every creature that lives in that great body of water. He sees every ship that sails its waves. With a God this big, what could ever escape His attention? What need could we have that He cannot handle? Where could we go that we are not in His presence? What on the earth, above the earth, in the earth, or below the earth can make us afraid? Certainly, we can place our trust in a God so big that even the ocean waves obey their boundaries.

And yet we doubt instead of having boundless faith in an unbound God. We live in fear instead of living carefree in the care of God. Let me ask you—what person or thing can compare to Him? Who or what is more stable than God? Is anything more powerful or glorious? Too often I forget the wonder of God even though all of creation declares His glory. I need to remind myself daily of His greatness. In doing so, all my fears tend to fade in the light of His presence.

Today will you take time to recall how great and magnificent He is? Do it again tomorrow and the next day, too. See if you don’t find yourself awestruck by the One so magnificent we can scarcely wrap our minds around the thought of Him. But, oh how we need to try! It will do wonders for our faith and put to death our fears that smother our peace. Nothing gives me hope nor soothes my anxieties like meditating on the attributes of God. For what’s impossible for a God who holds the whole world in His hands? Nothing—absolutely nothing!

I was really ministered by the sharing of Pastor Bryan last week as He shares on 3 easy-to-remember-yet-easy-to-forget-when-hardpressed principles.

LOOK UP, LOOK AT, LOOK BEYOND.

As I was reflecting on God's Word these few weeks, the notion of Promises keep coming back into my head. Again, I was reminded of Promises when we read Zechariah being used by God to remind His people of restoring God's temple.

Zechariah; Yahweh remembers. When God remembers something, He remembers for eternity. When He make a promise to you, He undetakes to see it to pass. God is always there when He makes a promise to you, but many times we give up because we couldn't wait any longer to anticipate the fulfillment.

2 Peter 3:9 says 'The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise...'. Do you stand on this?

Have you ever considered that not having a quiet time each day could have devastating consequences? Joshua discovered this during the second battle of his career as leader of Israel. He had just experienced the stunning victory over Jericho where God’s hand leveled the city. Joshua, unaware that Achan had taken accursed things, eagerly set his sights on Ai, the next city to conquer.

Had Joshua been in communication with God, he would have known God was very angry with Israel because of Achan’s sin. God proved several times with Moses that he was forthright concerning the people’s disobedience. Instead of seeking the Lord concerning the conquest of Ai, Joshua relied on the recommendations of his scout team. After an embarrassing defeat, Joshua sought the Lord for answers. God answered Joshua specifically concerning Achan’s sin. He told Joshua what was taken and what must be done in order to restore his protection of the people.

Achan’s had taken objects that God had banned. He took a garment, silver and gold and hid them in his tent. Making matters worse, the silver and gold were supposed to be given to God’s treasury. As a result, God withdrew his protective hand from the Israelites and they became “liable to destruction” (Joshua 7:12 NIV). God required that the objects Achan stole be destroyed in order to restore his protection over the people. Achan’s sin not only caused the defeat at Ai, but it also caused the death of himself and his entire family by stoning (Joshua 7:25).

This story illustrates the value of meeting with God on a regular basis. Though we may think we are living a “good life,” sin can easily creep in and gain footholds. God will show us the footholds we have given to the devil through sin and what must be done to remove them. Repentance is very important to maintaining God’s protective cover over us. As God reveals the things in our lives that must go, we must be obedient in getting rid of them. Repentance may not avert our sin’s consequences, but it will help minimize the damage and maximize the restoration.

The road of honouring God requires Godly wisdom and strength. We must stay tapped into God daily for the help we need. Only God can see the hidden ambushes the enemy may have set for us. He will help us steer clear of them and walk in purity to enjoy the fruits of righteousness. Please make it top priority to start your day with God every day!

So much for this 2 months on Honouring God. But let's stop in our tracks again and look back on our starting line: why do we honour Him?

To honour someone is to show respect, an act signifying approval and distinction. To my surprise, one version actually mention that honour is about CELEBRATING respect.

Now now, how on earth do we honour God by celebrating our respect towards Him? Perhaps in our journey with God so far, we get the mindset that honouring God means being really holy so that we wont blemish the name of God; being very careful and watchful in what we say or do.

I'm not suggesting that the above is wrong, just that we can perhaps look into a fresh perspective. Do we honour God with joy and enthusiasm?

Try asking God how you can celebrate respect towards Him.

As believers, we are all called to transform the little world around us. C.S. Lewis offered a thoughtful perspective on remaining heavenly minded while continuing to make an impact in this present world. In Mere Christianity, he said. "Hope…means…a continual looking forward to the eternal world…it does not mean that we are to leave the present world as it is. If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next…It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at Heaven and you will get earth 'thrown in': aim at earth and you will get neither."

16Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. Being heavenly minded is not natural. It happens when we focus and meditate on the reality and wonderful hope of the world to come. When we do, we can bring a taste of heaven to the little world around us. So let's not become complacent — but stay focused there, so we can be effective here… and soon enough we will hear the Lord saying, "Well, done thou good and faithful servant!"

Honouring God can be through many different ways, eg. Relationships, Church, Service, Giving... but one thing for sure, you can't truly honour God if you don't love Him.

'Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.'
1 John 4:8

God takes pleasure when we take special efforts in honouring Him in all that we do and say. Such efforts don't simply birth out of a want to gain self-righteousness. In such a case, we seek to honour ourselves rather than the Father.

One thing that got me captivating from the time I've accepted Christ till now is His everlasting love for me. Its unchanging, unconditional. And without the knowledge of Christ's love, I would not have any idea the kind of love towards others that will be pleasing to God. In turn, I would not be able to truly honour Him if I had loved with my own standards.

Yea yea yea, we all know what's this all about. But somewhere, somehow, God's love is not fully shown amongst us. Are we loving like how the Father loves?

How time flies! We have entered into the second month of 2009. Thank God for the zeal and the passion He has given us! Lets continue to press on to worship God and serve Him. Read a daily bread entry recently and found it pretty interesting and ministering. Here's how it goes:

We always crave change in a new year. This is why in January 1 we start diets, exercise programs, and new hobbies. Of course, a month later we're usually back to our old bad habits. Maybe that's because we crave too big a change and do not have enough power and will to make the changes.
I wonder how many Jesus-followers have made commitments to change and grow spiritually but are experiencing frustration because they don't have will and power to carry out those steps. Paul addresses this issue in his letter to the Philippians. As he encouraged them to work out their salvation with fear and trembling (2:12), Paul said they would not be on their own. God Himself would energize them to grow and carry out His tasks. The first area affected would be the desire to change and grow. He was also working to give them the power to make the actual changes (v.13).

"It is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure."
Philippians 2:13

God has not left us alone in our struggles to attain spiritual growth. He helps us want to obey Him, and then He gives us the power to do what He wants. Ask Him to help you want to do His will:)

The story of Gideon (Judges 6:11-16) is a fascinating account of how the Lord used a regular guy to do an amazing work. Every person who feels weak and insignificant in the face of a struggle can get a "faith boost" from the story of Gideon. This opening scene introduces Gideon, who was working at the winepress for his father. Gideon probably did not have high aspirations in life, but simply to eventually take over his father's business and work the land.

Gideon's outlook drastically changed when an angel visited him. The angel said some amazing things to Gideon, and Gideon seemed to think it was too good to be true. He came from a weak clan and was the least in his father's house. Gideon, like many other Israelites felt that God had deserted his people. Despite Gideon's unbelief, the Lord did not give up on him. Instead, the Lord restated that he would use him to deliver Israel.

Gideon's testimony can encourage us in our faith. We may be looking at a situation with impossible odds and feel that there is no way that God will come through for us. We can stand on God's word in faith, believing that he will help us do the impossible because He is the God of the impossible! With God's Spirit living in us (1 Corinthians 6:19), we can stand confidently knowing that God is with us.

"Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."

Isaiah 41:10

If we're trying to break sex addiction, we can take courage that the Holy Spirit will empower us to put our lustful deeds of the flesh to death (Romans 8:11,13). We need not make excuses like Gideon did, saying, "I'm weak" or "I'm beyond forgiveness I've sinned so much" or "the temptations I face are too powerful for me." We can take a faith boost from Gideon. If he could single-handedly defeat a nation with the Lord, in Christ you can gain victory over whatever holds you.

Last week was a unbelievable youth service! In fact, the past few months have been amazing! God has started revival in each and every one of our hearts, and He delivered His Word through His servant last week to continue to bring revival to the people around us in families, schools & campuses, and the market places.

'Jesus said to him (Zacchaeus the tax collector), "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."'
Luke 19:9-10

We get very very comfortable sometimes in church because we are surrounded by like-minded bros and sis that we slip into the mode of self-centredness. We fail to make the souls of those who have yet to believe the burden of our hearts. Ben Chew shared that in order for us to participants of the heartfelt cry of God, we need to ask Him for the burden. The desire that comes only from God can only be given by God Himself.

Coming to church isn't merely about celebrating His goodness and worshipping Him in spirit and truth. It is a lighthouse to draw people into light. If we boast about loving God, let's also boasts about sharing God's burden to bring souls and hear heavens rejoice:)

Happy New Year to all! I am really excited about 2009 as I believe that it is a new start for many of us. Through the dynamic worship that we had the past two weeks, I believe we are in for a breakthrough if we continue to press on together. Detonate ministry will be different this year and indeed we want to detonate for God this year. Pastor shared a simple message on Saturday which I think is important for all of us to know and put into practice in the new year.

Accept responsibility in your life
Some may think that we are still young why talk about responsibility. Like it or not, young and old, we all have responsibilities no matter where we are. Able to accept responsibilities for our lives help us to grow not only physically but also spiritually and emotionally as well. However, responsibilities like studying hard, honour our parents, be a good testimony are things we can handle and if we do it well, we will impact lives.

Believe I can change
I can versus I can't. We often gives ourselves excuses like "I'm like that one la." God said very clearly in 2 Cor 5:7 that the old must go before the new can come. Do not let our pass habits hinder us from growing. Believe that we can change. Perhaps God is waiting for us to change before He reveal His next step for us.

Clarify want you want
Set goals for yourself that you want to achieve in 2009. Like want Pastor said, don't take the thinking of whatever will be will be. If we never set detailed goals, we will never meet them. Take some time to pray and write down some goals(may be just one or two) you want to achieve for God this year. Together as a ministry, we want to accomplish these goals together.

Do it now!
Start now or you will never start. Don't procrastinate anymore. Start the year fired up and give your all to Jesus. He will honour you.

Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. 1 Timothy 4:12

As we come to the end of the 2008, Let us reflect upon all the things that have happened this year, whether good or bad. We may not understand why God allow certain things to happen but we can be sure that everything is of God's perfect plan. As for the good things, we can only stand in awe of God and thank Him.

"God has plans for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future"
Jeremiah 29:11

That verse is an all time favorite verse for me as I know and is certain that everything that happened is of God's plan and He never meant to hurt me. Do you believe that God has good plans for you? Through our faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior, we become heirs to God's kingdom (Romans 8:17). The details of our inheritance are found in the Bible, which is God's "will" and testament to us. It was ratified by Christ's death (the testator). As heirs, we can claim this inheritance in Christ today. We don't have to wait until we die to receive the good things God has for us.

God has given us the Holy Spirit to teach us what is in the will for us – the things He "has freely given to us." As we read the Bible, the Holy Spirit will quicken our minds and understanding to the spiritual truths in it. Apart from God, nobody can fully understand or know God's plans for us. However, since we have God's Spirit living in us, we can know and understand His plans for us!

If we listen to the Spirit and read the Bible, we'll know how to best enjoy the things that God has freely given us. God's blessings are to be enjoyed both now and in eternity by those who love Him. This doesn't mean that our lives are going to be trouble-free and painless. As Jesus explained to His disciples, "I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33). As we experience trouble in the world, we can fix our eyes on eternal perspectives. The troubles and trials we go through now will help build character, patience and perseverance that will help us complete His mission for our lives.

As we celebrate Christmas, lets rejoice because we know that we are in good hands, the hands of the Almighty God!

Pastor Bryan shared a simple but important message about "mindsets" on Saturday. Especially as we edge towards the revival meeting and the year end, it is important that we recognise and remove the negative mindsets like fear, sin and doubts that have hindered us from growing. Only then can we as a ministry revive spiritually in the new year.

5Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.[b]7You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

Colossians 3:5-10

As Christians our "old self" (evil desire lurking in our members) is buried in baptism, and God resurrects us to live in "newness of life" (Romans 6:4). This newness of life is exponentially better than life in our old sinful habits. Yet too many of us fail to experience the new life Jesus bought for us. We find that our old ways are easy to fall back into, and our newness of life seems to be choked out by our old self. We're saved, yet settle for "carnal Christianity," which makes it hard to distinguish our lives from those of the world.

We shouldn't be surprised when people ask us, "Why do I need Jesus? You call yourself a Christian, but your life is no different from mine!" Ouch! God didn't intend for us to live that way. Living a transformed life IS possible and we CAN become like Jesus.

The newness of life starts with killing the old self, repeatedly and faithfully. We don't have to gut this out on our own. God, in his wonderful grace, promises to help us do this through the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11,13). He won't do it for us, but He will join us when we step out in obedience.
Arm yourself with the truth from the Word to help you discern sin's lies. Colossians 3:16 says, "Let the Word of Christ have its home [in your hearts and minds] and dwell in you in richness" The Word re-tunes our sensitivity to right and wrong, and revitalizes our spirit. When it permeates our thoughts, the subtle moves of the old self are brought to light.

As we look forward to the revival meeting, let's await that day with expectations and preparing ourselves to receive from God. Lets always keep our ministry in prayer. Detonate ministry will be a revived ministry in 2009!

Detonate claims onto Luke 1:37 "For nothing is impossible with God.". I believe God has been moving in our midst, and to know that He is here with us, we declare Him Lord over our ministry:)

The show to me was a reminder of how the world thinks when it faces an obstacle that seems to too difficult to overcome, be it mentally or physically. It also reminded me that things will not work out as planned, as how we want it to go.

However, the crux of the show that really encouraged me was that although things were not going smooth for the coach, he did not turn to worldly ways but instead seek after God in whom he trusted in. God also spoke to him through using another person who felt compelled to tell him that the "doors were still open". Although God may not have spoken to him personally, I think he must have felt really reassured when he had heard that.

Friends play an important role as well as seen by the assistant coach when he was sitting on the fence and unsure of giving his full support to the coach. Friends can either build you up or shatter your hopes through their words and actions. It was good that he finally gave his support after seeing the change in the program made by the coach.

The coach decided to change the perspective to one that honoured God no matter what the circumstance and used his current position to reach out to the students as well. Although the students were not receptive at first, I'm sure that the seed was planted when the coach started the change. Moreover, the prayer for the students in the morning everyday while passing by the lockers by another person also played a part in the later scene of the revival in their school.

David Childers was not confident of himself as he used to play soccer and was new to American Football. However, his Dad encouraged him not to be afraid to try nor afraid of failure. To me, this is true because we face many decisions in life, but we do not necessarily make the right ones all the time. Hence, they result in failure but we learn from these experiences and become a better person, wiser. God used him at the end to complete the impossible win over the Giants by scoring a 50+ foot field goal.

While honouring God is one thing, we must honour our parents as well as it is a commandment and although it may not seem like they care for us, they actually do, alot and since they are experienced, they will want the best for us. However, in the spur of the moment, we sometimes say things that we do not mean and hurt their feelings. This show serves as a reminder that we must seek forgiveness and at the same time if people sin against us, we must be able to forgive them as well and forget.

Our God is strong and faithful, with him, the impossible is accomplishable! :) Let us continue our walk with God as we seek to become more like him and develop a intimate relationship with him.

This movie has taught me alot. As a sport player myself, the helplessness and the demoralization the coach faced was heartily real to me. The umpteen challenges and failures that we face in life is inevitable, and the only way to solve these problems is to look to God for His wisdom and strength. It taught me that we should first honour God and in everything we do, put Him first for He is the source and without Him, we are indeed nothing at all. It is impossible for us to do things with our own capability and understanding. Through this movie I also came to realise that there are so many times in my life that i failed to really spend time thinking and relating my life to His words. Life is often so hectically scheduled that i so often ungratefully neglected Him. This realization of mine made me ponder and repent over my mistakes and made me realise that in everything, God should always come first. As matthew 6:33 says, "But seek first His kingsom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" Therefore, we should put Him as the first in our life and trust Him for He will never fail us.

Many times in my life I have faced situation that requires me to make the choice of giving up or pressing on, be it in my studying years (which is many years ago!) or my physical fitness running test which is a race against time and body strength. While watching “Facing the Giants” last Saturday, the scene where the coach instructed one of his players to go half the football field on hands, I observed similar struggles when I took my fitness test. Even before stepping out, the thought of giving up and weariness came storming into my head. It just feel that no matter how hard I try, it will get me no where, so what is the point of giving my best?

In the film, the coach blindfolded him and gave him one and only ONE instruction, that is to give his ALL! Although the coach wasn't the one doing the task, he didn't stop encouraging him, didn't left him by himself but follow him throughout. And his perseverance impacted the rest of the team to start believing in the impossible, to start believing in giving their best.

Is this similar in our journey as a Christian? Being a Christian, we are called to persevere, to run the race with endurance, and to not lose heart in this journey of life as we allow Him to lead us.
And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Galatians 6:9

It is not just about winning the game but being victorious in life and living a life to the fullest. At the end of the verse, it says if we do not lose heart, in due season we will reap a harvest. And that's the result we saw in the team that did not lose heart but persevere to the end; the Champion!

Therefore, let us all, whether in church or outside church with our non-believing friends, let us be one that stand tall in adversity, giving our all to the test and do not give up! For in due season, we will emerge as a champion, a champion that Honors God and Impacting Lives!!

Prayer is a simple activity that involves making requests of God in a humble manner. Earnest prayer adds emphasis of passion and intensity of our request. As we follow God and attend to the business of His kingdom, our desires will naturally gravitate to the needs of that kingdom. Examples include salvation of the lost, healing of the sick, growth & edification of the body of Christ, and bringing glory to God.

40Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak."
Matthew 26

Jesus called attention to our need to be watchful in prayer. He was amazed that his closest disciples could not watch and pray for even one hour while He contemplated the greatest move of God in history. We can heed His call by being aware of the times, looking for where God's hand is moving in the situations around us and praying that His will be done. This importance of our prayer becomes especially clear when we consider that each of us are placed in totally unique situations that no other Christian may be in. It may be that God has placed us there for the express purpose that we will pray his will be done so that his kingdom objectives will be accomplished.

Similarly, God is calling each of us to pray for the situations we are in every day. We need not offer elaborate prayers of King James English to invoke God's intervention. Rather, we can keep it very simple and ask God to intervene for the purposes of His kingdom. For example, our prayer could be "Lord please grant her salvation," or, "Father, please heal him." Being persistent with such requests doesn't mean we have to repeat our requests like a chant or mantra. It may simply be to keep the request at the forefront of our thoughts as we praise God and worship him during our prayers, inviting him to intervene. It may be that another person like Peter has been imprisoned and chained (literally or figuratively) and is at a critical point of life. Our earnest prayers may be the critical factor required for God's intervention and deliverance of that person.

As a child of God, we are all called to a body of Christ to reside; that is the local church we are in. And there is no denial that there are many influences that compete to draw us away from the local church. With the advent of many excellent television ministries, we can be tempted to simply feed on the teaching they offer, while forsaking our relationship with the local church. The convenience of not having to dress up and go out can be tempting, especially if we stayed up late the night before, or have some projects we'd like to get started on (while we're watching TV).

Another trap that may caught us into is "church shopping." It is linked to the customer service mentality of the business world. This mentality can cause us to come to church expecting to be entertained…i.e. a powerful sermon, electrifying music, perfect climate control and comfortable pews. If the church fails to meet our expectations in any area, we can always go to the next church down the street and see what they're up to. Such "church-shopping" is a dangerous and unhealthy disease that can distract us from the most important reason for going to church – to worship God. Under the guise of finding the church "where God wants us to be," we can easily deceive ourselves (and others) about what we're really looking for.

"And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching"

Hebrews 10:24-25

One of the basic benefits of plugging into the right church is that we can give and receive encouragement, comfort and strength. As Paul explained, this occurs through the use of the spiritual gifts that God has given each of us. Since God gifts each person differently, meeting as a group provides a wonderful variety of gifts that meet the needs of the people present. Those who miss out going to the church will miss out on the benefit of the spiritual gifts that they desperately need (whether they know it or not). Like a beautiful tapestry, the assembled church with their gifts reflects the very glory of God.

There is no perfect church, because there are no perfect people. If you are striving to walk in purity you will need encouragement along the way from people who share your commitment to Christ. Take part in your church today. Be part of the Body.

POWER - choose your attitude.

If you have been following our weekly newsletter since May 2007 (from emails to our blogspot), you would have realise the title of this week's post sounds familiar.

'..being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.'

Colossians 1:11-12

Why, sometimes Christians look more dead than their non-believing friends! We were called to freedom, but we seem to be in much bondage eh? Go look at yourself in the mirror. Is your face glowing?

What is your attitude when you need to face stress, problems, deadlines? Do we drag our feets? Do we take hard time trying to get ourselves outta bed? We have a hope. That is the power of God vested in each and everyone of us. What do you want for yourself? A defeated son of God? Or a victorious son of God?

Now, take a conscious effort in noticing our own attitudes when we have to do something we dislike or find it hard to do. Whether you are all hyped up or emo-ing about it, it's okay! There's always room for improvement. Tap on the power of God. Ask Him to give you that power to win over your cicumstances.

Even for our ministry, let's prepare for a fresh start in 2009. We will not look back like Lot's wife and dwell upon what we once have. We are going to look forward with the power of God, and it will be a time of life-changing experience. Rise up people of Detonate! The time has come for us to take what is ours, given by God. We don't want to be sweeped over by the raging seas nor the rolling storms. Lift up your heads!

Gaining freedom from bondage to sin is usually not an easy or quick task. It requires that we work in partnership with the Holy Spirit in overcoming the various aspects of the bondage. The best way I know of to get in tune with the Holy Spirit is to have a daily quiet time with the Lord, including Bible study, prayer, praise and worship.

"How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, O LORD; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word."

Psalm 119:9-16 NIV

The Bible has everything we need to know about God, living for God and overcoming sin. It gives us many examples of how to follow God and how to avoid the many possible pitfalls in life. King David had a firm grip on God's word and its importance to a pure walk with God. Specifically, David said that purity will stem from:

Living according to God's word and delighting in it
Seeking God with all our heart
Hiding God's word in our heart (learn it, study it, memorize it)
Praising God and speaking his word
Rejoicing in obedience to God's commands
Meditating on God's word and considering His ways

If we're not meeting with God to do the above things, our hopes of living in purity will not be realized. Without the daily input of God's word in our life, we will gradually be overrun by the world's desires and the corruption of the lusts within our heart.

selfless giving

We have been so socially gracious whenever we receive a comment from people whom recognise our talents and gifts. But don't we all take pride in the good and best that God has place in us?

'But just as you excel in everything -
in faith, in speech, in knowledge,
in complete earnestness and in your love for us -
see that you also excel in this grace of giving.'
2 Corinthians 8:7

Some of you have probably recognise your talents. That's awesome! But probably some of you are still uncertain of what you do best. But one thing I do know: Each of you have one thing that you are good at. Be it known or unknown, God has bless us with gifts because He gives good gifts to His children. But we seem to forget on alot of occasions that God the Father is the One who gives us, according to His portion of grace, the ability to excel in certain areas. Could that be our carelessness, then, to use the gifts for His kingdom?

Most churches reflect the popular notion that only 20% of the church is serving the 80%. What a pity! God's intention is having each and everyone of the Body of Christ to manifest their talents to serve one another. The worst thing that could happen, is the 80% comments on how poorly the service offered by this 20% has done, but yet sometimes refuse to do anything about it. My concern here is not to criticise the 80%, but simply to raise awareness about the 20%. These people gave their best, their time and efforts to serve God. Not to say they are looking for men's praises, but sometimes it can get rather saddening to hear awful comments from those who do verbal services, but no action at all. It seems easier to say than to do. But sometimes going the extra mile to appreciate and care for those who have been serving unconditionally and share the burdens is an answer to a prayer of need.

Will you be willing to roll up your sleeves and get into the field? Sometimes our selfishness to care for ourselves means more burdens laid upon those who are serving faithfully. If we could all be in the grace of giving of ourselves, then we'll make serving one another more meaningful and exciting. I do hope we don't take this 20% for granted by assuming they will do it all. Do you know if they have prayers of needs that are unmet because fellow christians chose to be tight-fisted with their talents? Let's work towards a church where 100% serves 100%!

How often do you go to God with requests in your prayer times? How often do you simply offer thanks to God for whatever you can think of? Is our prayer times used to be filled with requests for God to do things for me and for others? While reading the Psalms, let's take a different route in prayer by starting out each day thanking God for whatever you could think of. You will discover that there are more things to be thankful for than you ever realized before. You will also discover that looking for what you can be thankful for increases your own sensitivity and recognition of God's hand in the situations of your life.

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his love endures forever.
2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say this—
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for men,
9 for he satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.

Psalms 107

This Psalm reveals a particular aspect of God that we can all be thankful for. God "satisfies the longing soul and fills the hungry soul with goodness." That is an awesome statement, isn't it? How many times have we tried to fill the longings of our soul with wealth, or knowledge, or success in our school or work? Those things will never bring fulfillment because our hunger is a spiritual need that only God can satisfy. Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good. He has redeemed us from the hand of the enemy and fills our soul with goodness!

Questions for further thought:

What does it mean to make sacrifices of thanksgiving?
How much time have you spent thanking God each day during your quiet times?
What can you do to incorporate giving thanks during your quiet times?
Take a moment to jot down all the things you can thank God for today.

As young people, we always look for things that are modern, up-to-date, and catchy. We know much more than the youths in our parents' generation, and we are exposed to the world. But, do we really know everything we need to?

Somehow, there is this lack of passion for God's Word in our generation. Probably it is the stigma that it is of the past, it is too literature and aren't interesting. So where do all the sharing on God's Word is living go to?

God's Word is living. It is real, and present to our needs and circumstance. It surpasses time and is steadfast to all generations. There is no single doubt to many that God's Word promises and gives hope. We are all hyped up when it comes to worship and fellowship. But do we come with the same passion when we seek God's Word? Or is it another time of boring religious teaching?

It is when we are young that God is able to mold and shape us. Since God's Word is living, we who read and hide it in our hearts will be filled with life. Our ways are guided by His ways, and our thoughts by His truth. Do you rejoice in following God's Word, like in verse 14? What attitudes do we come with when we discover His Word? It is when we come with a teachable spirit and an expectant heart that we will experience this life that He so promises through His Word.

Waiting is something that all of us find it how to deal with. We don't like the long queues, the traffic jams, the bus coming late and many others. Sometimes even when our food comes late in the restaurant, we can't help but complain to one of the staff there.These are the common things that we faced each day.

There are also the harder waits: a childless couple waiting for a child; a single person waiting for a suitable life partner; a person who wants to be a doctor and even a student waiting for the release of results online.

What we wait for, however, is far less important then what God is doing while we wait. In such times He works in us to develop those hard-to-achieve spiritual virtues of meekness, kindness, and patience with others.But more importantly, we learn to lean on God alone and to rejoice and be glad in Him.

"Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains."

James 5:7

F.B.Meyer said, "What a chapter might be written of God's delays! It is the mystery of the art of educating human spirits to the finest temper of which they are capable. What searchings of the Word of God, what upliftings of the souls... All these are associated with those weary days of waiting, which are, nevertheless, big with spiritual destiny."

As we conclude this week's post on relationships, i felt the above verses are good closures for this theme. Loving one another definitely do not stop at the end of this quarter, but it a continual learning process. It may seem rather superficial sometimes, but relationship building got to start from somewhere right?

Knowing what is love is one thing, doing is another. It is quite obvious many know by word, but not exactly by deed. Sometimes we are too quick to say others have not love by action and truth, only in words, but what about ourselves? Are we free from the claim too? I doubt so, else we would have not in the first place point our fingers at others for not doing it.

We all want to receive love don't we? But we always wait for someone else to take the first step first, then we reciprocate that love of kindness. That is not what the agape love that God wants us to have. That is brotherly love (phileo) which is done to another who has done something good to us. God wants us to love first even it seems that we are not being loved in the first place.

Taking Jesus as our example, He gave His life for each and everyone of us, with no favouritism. He surely did not wait for us to worship Him or love Him back before dying on the cross for us. He paid the penalty of our sins way before we knew Him, before we receive Him into our lives. Can we also lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters, even for those whom you are unfamiliar with? Try this week to know someone whom you have never or seldom fellowshipped with. Spend time. Leave your comfort zone.

As I was watching the famous variety show "America got Talent" on channel 5 one evening, I was so amazed by people that look so ordinary but have such great talents hidden in them. Being the curious part of me, I decided to go youtube to view the other performances of the show. As I was scrolling through the different shows, this particular performance really stunned me. A mobile salesman Paul Potts took the stage. The judges looked skeptically at one another when the nervous, unassuming, ordinary-looking chap announced he would sing opera----until Potts started his first note.

He began to sing Puccini's "Nessun Dorma"---and it was magical! The crowd roared and stood in amazement while the judges sat stunned in tearful silence. It was one of the greatest surprises any television program has ever had, in large part because it came wrapped in such an ordinary package.

In the Old Testament, the rescuer of Israel arrived at the battlefield in a most unlikely form---a young Shepherd boy. King Saul and his entire army were surprised when David defeated Goliath and won the day.They needed to learn the way that God looks at people. He said to the prophet Samuel,

"The Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

1 Samuel 16:7

If we judge others only be their outer appearance, we might miss the wonderful surprise of what's in their heart. Before u judge others, put yourself in their shoes and see how you would react. Get to know them better before passing a judgement. You never know how much can words affect people. Love God and love others. This is God's number ONE commandment.

I still remember that Saturday when Rob Bell's 'Breathe' was screened. I was in ING and YY discussion and we were going through more in-depth thoughts about what was being shared over in the video. And He moved.

God gives us the breath of life, which is the life that we are living. That is for sure, no doubts about that for many of us. We know the story of creation so well (in Genesis 1-2) that we were made from dust but made into beings by His breath. Yet by knowing this in our minds, we forgot about our breaths. We breathe in and out daily, yet we do not give much thoughts to that very essence that holds our lives.

'Why spend money on what is not bread,
and your labour on what does not satisfy?
Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good,
and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.
Give ear and come to Me;
hear Me, that your soul may live.
I will make an everlasting covenant with you
my faithful love promised to David.'
Isaiah 55:2-3

We constantly are looking for something to satisfy us, to meet our needs and wants. As a youth myself, I am also looking for something that will give me satisfaction. I get disheartened when I see youths running all over the place just to find for satisfaction. When that feeling of satisfaction no longer exists, they start running all over the place again to look elsewhere. When I see youths trying to look for love and pleasure in the wrong places, making mistakes and living in the consequences, my heart broke. I feel even more helpless when salvation is offered to them, but they turn it down.

God is the source of Your life. He gives you breath. Thus He will be the One who will satisfy You. Are you constantly running around to look for something that will satisfy You? It is tiring to keep running around in search isn't it? Come to Jesus, and He will put an end to your search. For He satisy, eternally.

2 vs 10

I hate to admit it but I'm a worrier. I believe the people who are close to me can verify this. I worry about almost everything: even what clothes I should wear the next day. This is one habit and shortcoming that I need to overcome. Remember one of the blog entry on worrying? Here's another aspect we can look and perhaps learn to overcome worrying. Once again God brought me to this verse in Matthew 6 when He said:" Do not worry." Don't worry about the basic needs of life--- food, clothing, shelter--- and don't worry about tomorrow.

Worry may be a symptom of a bigger problem. Sometimes it's a lack of gratitude for the way God has cared for us in the past. Or perhaps it's a lack of faith that God really is trustworthy. Or it may be the refusal to depend on God instead of ourselves. Or perhaps it's something we have done wrong and worrying that we don't deserve God's help anymore.

Some people expand the worry circle to their families,friends,and churches. They're a lot like the 10 spies in Numbers 13 who spread their fear and doubt to everybody else. But those who put their trust in God alone can stand along side Joshua and Caleb, the only ones in the group of 12 who God allowed to enter the Promised Land.

"Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication,with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God."

Philippians 4:6

Don't let worries hold you back from what God may be trying to teach you. When you have sinned,confess to God immediately and not do it again. Do not let this affect you bringing your request to God. He invites you to bring your anxious thoughts directly to Him. Lets remind each other and be overcomers of worrying!

I believe we do, at some point in our lives, doubted ourselves. We think we are worthless because of the comparisons we've made with others who are way ahead of us. We feel we are sinful and hopeless because of the mistakes we had done and the awful comments we hear about the ugly side of us.

'When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw Him [Jesus] eating with the "sinners" and tax collectors, they asked His disciples: "Why does He eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"

On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." '

Mark 2:16-17

Verse 17 speaks of the core reason why Jesus came: To redeem His people from their bondages. Be it Christians or non-Christians, we do have areas or issues in our lives that is not called to Christ's likeness yet. We know we need healing, but we often turn to other things or people to help perfect this area in our lives. He came to the lowly, to hear the lowly, to release the lowly. He invites you to a personal banquet, with you as the only special guest and His entire attention is fixed on you alone.

Sometimes we set a barrier to Jesus because we feel we are not worthy to be His child, to be in fellowship with Him. I hope Mark chapter 2 will encourage you that it is when we recognised we are worthless, then God can give you His worth, which is much more than any human worth:)

Recently as I was asking a brother whether he has a prayer request, he says he needs prayer in changing his belief from "He cannot" to "He can". Many times in our lives, we often have a lot of "what if" questions that pops out from our mind. Sometimes we feel that we are not good enough and wished to be like another person. However, God has made each of us unique and you are who you are for a purpose. No one is born out of an accident.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
Psalm 139:14

An unmarried missionary had been disparaging herself. She was unhappy with her life in general,but she was especially displeased with what she felt was her low level spiritual growth. One morning she looked searchingly at herself in the mirror. Then, very slowly, she said, "God, I thank You that I'm myself and can never be anyone else."

That was her moment of liberating self-acceptance. She realised that by God's design she was an absolutely unique person, a Christ-redeemed human being who could never be replaced or duplicated.

Do you condemn yourself because you feel that you aren't good enough? Do you see yourself as a second-rate person, not able to do or accomplish what others can do? We can rise above the mood of self-rejection and enjoy grateful self-acceptance when we put our lives into the nail-pierced hand of Jesus.

I'm awed by the first 8 mins of the Beijing Olympics. 2008 men in perfect synergy, hitting the drums in one unison! I only knew my eyes did not leave the screen a single second during that particular item.

'Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever greivances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them together in perfect unity.'

Colossians 3:12-14

I have no exact details what went on exactly for all 2008 men to deliver that item so flawlessly, but I believe it was no small deal. The trainings alone is beyond understanding of those not involved. I guess if you wanna have the exact same arrangement with just 50 people, it's already very laborous. To have each one to hit on the same beat, lifting hands at the same timing, with the same amount of strength and passion, it obviously cannot be accomplished over the night. Sacrifices to come for trainings; the frustrations during failed rehearsals when just one person play a note off the beat; the impatience of waiting for one another to achieve a certain performing standard etc. I would guess they prepared for it for a long long time. That must have gotten alot of endurance outta them!

In the same way, in a Body of Christ, the same mentality applies. We can't accomplish a vision or a God-given mission if all we do is to be a duck that keeps complaining and being irritated by the things that we feel are not the best. God calls His people into perfect unity. If the church today were to be assigned by God to do a mounting task, just like the 2008 men having to perform this spectacular item, would you think we are able to? Do you think if you are one of the 2008 men, you would actually give up because at that time you could not withstand the wearisome practices or working together with the other 2007 men? Yet each one of them is so important in contributing to the opening item. Their unity and perseverance brought honour to China. Likewise, we bring honour to God when we work together.

We have been chosen to be together, in this Body. Are we able to bear with one another and have patience in accepting them? Or do we forsake what God calls you in the spirit of unity and be critical of each other had done? May God be merciful to His people as we learn from Him. One Lord, One Spirit, One Baptism.

I believe all of us have gone through periods of time whereby things are just not going the way you want it to be. Perhaps in times like these the first thing that comes into our mind is : ''Why is this happening to me?" We start comparing ourselves to others and wonder why must we go through all these. Sometimes we will wonder what if these things didn't happen, wouldn't it makes our lives easier? Worse still, we may even come to a point when we blame God for doing this to us. Perhaps there is only one thing that God want us to do in such circumstances, that is to put our absolute faith and trust in Him alone.

"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand under it.''

1 Corinthians 10:13

It is always human nature for us to worry about things that we cannot see. When things starts to go wrong or go against the way we want it to be, we are not able to overcome it. However, the word of God said it clearly that faith is being certain of the what we cannot see. Faith is the opposite of sight. Perhaps in times where there are things that our mind cannot understand and our eyes cannot see, it is time for us to put our faith into action.

These worries and trials are experiences that all of our us have to go through. Perhaps we may face different problems but the bottom line remains the same; that we need to put our faith in God. Personally, from the past week until now, I have been facing setbacks, uncertainties and worries. I spent lots of time being "emo" and in a way, it affected my relationships with others and with God. I'm not able to overcome these. As I look into the mirror, there is only one thing that came into my mind when i saw my own reflection, and that is, "You are so weak!" Until then I realised I have been trying to overcome my problems with my own strength. On that night, I prayed to God that I'll depend on Him alone and He helped me and gave me a way out. This verse kept ringing in my mind:

''For I have plans for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a hope and a future.''
Jeremiah 29:11

Problems and worries will always be present in our lives. Even now, I'm worrying about something. However, it is up to us how we want to deal with these issues. Do we want to remain "emo" about it or we want to surrender them to God and be joyous? The process of trusting may not be easy but I know for certain that we'll emerge victories and grow even stronger after that. May God help us.

NATIONAL DAY PRAYER DRIVE! It will be on this coming Friday 8th August and we will be out to 3 significant locations in Singapore to pray for our nation. Cya all prayer warriors who have signed up already at 7.30pm sharp for a session of praise and worship before we set off for a breath-taking night! Celebrate the Singapore spirit!

Discipleship Group Session:):) we are into our 6th quality of learning the Fruit of the Spirit! Congrats for being so faithful in learning! We do hope you have been more developed and shaped by the Holy Spirit! Keep persevering as you allow God to strengthen the quality that He has given to everyone of you:):) Cya all at 4.30pm sharp for an hour's time of intense worship and prayer as we seek God as one ministry, as one unified Detonate standing back to back with one another in this spiritual battle:)) We believe He will be here.

Prayers from the Body:

Do remember our NS brothers (Joshua, Yu Po, Matthew, Ziyao, Josiah) who are undergoing their basic training. May the presence of God oversee and protect them as they go through the various trainings. Pray also that they will stand strong on God's promises for them and be a living testimony that draws men to Jesus! Strive on brothers!

Our final year poly students are on their FYPs and they do appreciate every prayer from you guys! May God give them wisdom, strength and joy to work through this entire period, from the beginning to the end. We also pray for patience as they work with their project mates to deliver the work that they will be satisfied with. Keep pressing on peeps!

Do we sometimes get excited when our best friends or close ones say the same thing or think in similar directions? Somehow we never doubt their intentions but believe you share the same thoughts and think alike.

How good and pleasant it is

when brothers (and sisters) live together in unity.

It is like precious oil poured on the head,

running down on Aaron's beard,

down upon the collar of his robes.

It is as if the dew of Hermon

were falling on Mount Zion.

For there the Lord bestows His blessing,

even life forevermore.

Psalms 133

Thank God He did not create us all the same. Imagine a world full of yourselves (hilarous hurhur)! But He made us diversified, yet by the same Spirit. Indeed, it is an awesome feeling when we have a group of friends who think in the same direction as us. And God rejoices as well, when His church comes together in one unified voice. We may not have to agree with every single thing that the ministry decides on, but it touches God so much when we put aside our differences in views and rights and come together to believe and work towards an unified goal.

As Detonate comes together to see a need to pray for a spiritual ministry breakthrough, we know we may not be comfortable to do so. But if we choose today, to put aside our likes and dislikes and join hearts and hands to this unified goal, won't just God so freely pour out His Spirit and heavens into our midst? Won't His sweet Presence just surround us, in our services and in our lives? He promised that when we come together in unity, there He will command His blessings, and even giving eternal life to us and those who hasn't known the Lord!

And this one unified goal I pray you will catch it and take your portion of the burden: We are going to pray till there is breakthrough. Would you be partnering?
